Key Areas of the Court
Three-Point Line
The three-point line in the WNBA is slightly shorter than the NBA. At the top of the key, the distance is 22' 1.75" from the basket. In the corners, it's 21' 7.88". This allows for a slightly easier three-point shot, contributing to the unique style of play in the WNBA.
Free-Throw Line
The free-throw line is 15' from the backboard, the same as in men's basketball. This consistency ensures that players can transition between different leagues without needing to adjust their shooting techniques significantly.
Key (Paint) Area
The key area, often referred to as the paint, is 19' x 16'. This area is crucial for post plays and rebounding, making it a focal point during games.
History of the WNBA
The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) was founded on April 24, 1996, as a counterpart to the NBA. It was established to provide a professional platform for women's basketball in the United States. Since its first season in 1997, the WNBA has grown significantly, both in popularity and in the level of competition, with many players achieving international fame and success.
Fun Fact
Did You Know? The WNBA was the first professional sports league to implement a maternity policy, allowing players to receive their full salary during maternity leave. This groundbreaking policy has set a precedent for other professional sports leagues to follow, emphasizing the importance of supporting women athletes both on and off the court.
Build a Court to These Dimensions
Shop Designs sells and installs the pieces that turn these measurements into a real court. Start with the surface. Our VersaCourt® basketball court tile kits come in small, half court and full court sizes, install over an existing concrete slab, and can be painted with regulation game lines. The full range of colors and tile types is in our VersaCourt collection.
Then pick the hoop. Every in-ground basketball hoop we carry uses a tempered glass or shatterproof aluminum backboard on a rust-proof aluminum pole, and freight is shown at checkout:
- Dominator 72" glass adjustable hoop, the regulation backboard size used in this guide, adjustable from 7 to 10 feet
- Dominator 60" glass adjustable hoop, a 3 foot overhang for tighter driveways
- Dominator 54" glass adjustable hoop, the compact option
- Dominator 72" fixed height shatterproof hoop, tamper resistant for schools, parks and HOAs
Want shot tracking built into the backboard? VersaCourt now pairs its courts with the huupe ARENA smart hoop, a 72" or 60" tempered glass system with an LED backboard and an app that records every shot. The hoop is sold directly by huupe: buy the 72" ARENA for $3,495 or the 60" ARENA for $2,995, and Shop Designs offers professional huupe ARENA installation in the Chicago suburbs and Northwest Indiana.
Finish with court lighting for evening games, and keep replacement backboards and hoop parts in mind for down the road.
