How Many OmniWall Panels Do I Need? A Wall-by-Wall Guide

Short answer: measure the wall in inches and divide by 16. Every OmniWall panel is 16 inches wide, so an 8-foot wall takes six panels and a 12-foot wall takes nine. The rest of this guide covers which size to buy, which pack gets you there cheapest, and what to do when the wall isn't a clean multiple of 16.

Panels by wall width

This assumes 16" x 48" panels hung vertically, side by side. That's how most garages do it, and it's what the 16" x 48" OmniPanel 3-Pack is built for. Prices are what we charge as of September 2026.

Wall width Panels 3-Packs Coverage Panel cost
4 ft (48") 3 1 16 sq ft $208.99
8 ft (96") 6 2 32 sq ft $417.98
12 ft (144") 9 3 48 sq ft $626.97
16 ft (192") 12 4 64 sq ft $835.96

What if my wall isn't a multiple of 16?

It usually isn't. A 10-foot wall is 120 inches. Seven panels cover 112 and leave 8 inches. You have three choices:

  • Center the panels and leave 4 inches of bare wall on each side. Nobody notices.
  • Fill the gap with a 5-inch strip. They come in 5" x 16", 5" x 32" and 5" x 48", and they take the same hooks and shelves.
  • Turn the corner. The 16", 32" and 48" corner panels carry the wall around an inside corner without a break.

Measure between obstacles, not wall to wall. Outlets are fine, the panels go around a cover plate. Windows, the door to the house, the breaker panel and the garage door track are what actually set your width.

Which panel size

OmniWall OmniPanel sizes drawn to scale with square footage: 16x48, 16x32, 16x20, 16x16, 5x48, 5x32, 5x16

All of them are 18-gauge steel, made in the USA, and all of them take every OmniWall accessory plus standard 1/4" pegboard hooks. The only real question is height.

  • 16" x 48" is the one for a main tool wall. Four feet of height holds long-handled tools, a row of shelves and a row of hooks under them. A single panel is $77.99. The 3-Pack is $208.99, about $25 less than three singles.
  • 16" x 32" fits above a workbench or under a window where four feet won't. Buy them as a 2-Pack, a 4-Pack (64" of wall) or a 5-Pack (80" of wall). You can also stack two to get 64" of height.
  • 16" x 20" and 16" x 16" are for the odd spots: the end of a cabinet run, beside a door, inside a trailer.

Vertical or horizontal

The panels mount either way. Vertical is the default because 16 inches matches standard stud spacing and the panels butt together into one continuous wall. Horizontal makes sense over a long bench where you want 48 inches of width and only 16 of height. The single 16" x 48" panel ships with both the 16" cleats for vertical and the 48" cleats for horizontal, so you can decide when it arrives.

Do I need to buy cleats?

Usually not. Every panel and pack comes with top and bottom cleats, mounting hardware and OmniClips. The cleats screw to the studs. The panel hangs on the top cleat and locks to the bottom one.

Extra cleat sets are worth it in two cases. First, if you want fewer pieces to level: one 48" cleat set hangs three panels at once, and a 32" set hangs two. Second, if you're stacking panels or building a layout that isn't side by side. The 16" x 32" 4-Pack lets you pick the cleat combination at checkout for exactly this reason.

Or skip the math and buy a kit

Kits are panels plus the hooks, shelves and holders already picked out. If you're starting from a bare wall they cost less than building the same thing piece by piece.

  • 1 Panel Kit, $116.99. One 16" x 32" panel with screwdriver, plier and wrench holders. Good beside a bench.
  • 2 Panel Kit, $236.99. A 32" x 32" wall with a top shelf, tool holders, hooks and bins.
  • 3 Panel Kit, $294.99. Our most popular kit. Covers a 4-foot section.
  • 4 Panel Kit, $489.99. 64" wide with overhead storage and 20 accessories. Splits into two 32" sections if you don't have one long wall.

What goes on the panels

A rough rule from the walls we install: plan one shelf or holder per panel and four to six hooks per panel, then add as you go. Cordless drills go on an impact shelf. Hand tools go on wire hooks and the screwdriver, plier and wrench holders. Hardware goes in metal bins. Everything else is in the accessories collection.

Quick answers

How many OmniWall panels for a two-car garage?

Most two-car garages have one usable side wall of 16 to 20 feet once you subtract the door to the house. That's 12 to 15 panels, or four to five 3-Packs. Plenty of people start with 8 feet over the bench and add on later. The panels you buy next year line up with the ones you buy today.

How high should I mount them?

Set the bottom edge just above your workbench, or around waist height on an open wall. With 48" panels that puts the top row within reach without a ladder.

Can I mix sizes and colors?

Yes. Every size shares the same slot pattern and cleat system. The 3-Pack comes in nine colors, including Ryobi green and DeWalt yellow.

Will my existing pegboard hooks fit?

Standard 1/4" pegboard hooks fit. OmniWall accessories lock in and won't pull out when you grab a tool, which is the reason to switch.
